Does Daylight Saving Time Affect Pets? 7 Tips To Help Them Adjust

Daylight Saving Time ends on November 3rd, 2024, and clocks will roll back an hour, marking shorter days and longer nights. But while you might enjoy that extra hour of sleep, your pet might not understand why breakfast is suddenly one hour late or why the evening walk feels a bit off.
For our pets, their internal clocks are set by routine, not by clock. To make the transition as smooth as possible, here are some tips to help your pets adjust.
1. Gradually Adjust Feeding Times
Pets often rely on regular feeding schedules, so a sudden shift can confuse them. In the week leading up to the time change, start moving their feeding time back by 10–15 minutes each day. This gradual adjustment helps them ease into the new schedule without feeling hungry or anxious.
2. Shift Walk and Playtimes Gradually
Dogs in particular are creatures of a set routine — if they know they get a walk at a specific time, they’re going to remind you. To avoid confusing them when the clocks change, start pushing walks or playtime a few minutes later every day. By the time Daylight Saving ends, your pet probably won’t even notice their schedule has shifted, and you’ll avoid those puppy eyes and impatient barks.
3. Use Natural Light to Your Advantage
Pets are far more in tune with the natural world than we are. They’re sensitive to daylight patterns, so use natural light to help them adjust. In the morning, open the curtains to let sunlight in earlier than usual to let them know that it's time to be active. In the evening, dim the lights and keep things cozy to let them know that it’s time to wind down.
4. Stick to a Consistent Bedtime Routine
Routines are reassuring for pets, so keep nighttime routines as consistent as possible, especially during the transition period. Whether it’s a bedtime snack, cuddle time, or a favorite bedtime toy, sticking to these cues can help your pets settle into the new schedule more comfortably.
5. Be Mindful of Bathroom Breaks
For pets who have a precise bathroom routine, the time change can throw a wrench in their schedule. Avoid any "oops" moments by gradually pushing back potty times. Consider giving them an extra break in the days leading up to the change if needed.
6. Keep Them Active During Daylight Hours
Shorter days can make pets less active. Take advantage of the extra hour on November 3rd to enjoy a longer morning walk, engage in a new game, or take them to the park. This will help them burn off extra energy and settle into the new evening routine more easily.
7. Be Patient and Observe Their Behavior
Every pet reacts differently to change. They may take a few days or even weeks to fully adjust to the new time. Watch for any signs of anxiety, restlessness, or changes in behavior. Adjust your approach if needed—whether that’s a few extra minutes of play, a special treat, or more snuggle time on the couch. With a little patience, you’ll both settle into the new schedule with ease.
